Locker signs with Angels

Posted by Bob Condotta

UW quarterback Jake Locker agreed to a contract today with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, his father, Scott, said this afternoon.

Scott Locker, who is handling the negotiations for his son, met with Angels officials this afternoon in Seattle and came to terms.

Details are not available but Scott Locker said "it's a done deal.'' Monday is the deadline for Major League teams to sign their draft picks. The Angels selected Locker as an outfielder in the 10th round of the June draft.

But before UW fans panic, Scott Locker said again that Jake Locker's plans remain to finish out his career at UW. He said there is no promise implied by the signing of the contract that Jake Locker will play baseball before his college career finishes.

Instead, signing the contract is mostly to secure what his baseball option would be should he want to pursue that sport down the road --- by signing, the Angels now own Locker's rights for the next six years.

"He's still fully committed to doing his thing here with the Huskies,'' Scott Locker said this afternoon. "It's the same deal we've always talked about that he's first and foremost here and then down the road he will have a shot, an opportunity with baseball (if he wants).''

Scott Locker said that at the moment, there are no plans for Jake Locker to play baseball next summer and then return to UW for his final football season, a path some college players have taken such as Oregon's Dennis Dixon.

"At this point, no,'' Scott Locker said.

However, Scott Locker also noted that there could be lots of options for his son next year.

"Obviously, there's a chance that he doesn't come back next year just because of the football thing,'' Scott Locker said, noting that Jake Locker could declare for the NFL Draft after this season if he desired. "I don't think that's going to happen, but it's always out there. But he fully expects to be here and finish up here. That's what he's always said he was going to do and that has stayed the same.''

By signing, Locker gives up his football scholarship and will now be a walk-on who will have to pay his own way --- the money he received is surely large enough to cover the cost of his education for the next two years.

As for how much money Locker may have gotten, as noted the details are unknown. However, one comparison is former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Braves in 2007. He received a $150,000 signing bonus.
