UW offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier was a guest on the Brock and Salk show on 710 ESPN KIRO earlier today. (And for the uninitiated, "Brock'' is former UW QB Brock Huard and :Salk" is, well, Salk).

Here's some of what Nussmeier had to say:

On what the team is doing now:

"Obviously we are not allowed to be there but they have been going five days a week right now and they practice twice a week on their own. They put it together and they have done a great job of making sure everybody's there and holding each other accountable. We are really starting to develop some leadership and that's a big part of growing as a team. Obviously Jake (Locker) has been in that role ever since he got here really. (Daniel Te'o-Nesheim) on defense and Jermaine Kearse has been stepping up and doing a great job. We have got a fairly young team and we have got to have some leadership emerge."

On Jake Locker being smart to stay away from injury:

"Any time you have a quarterback that is as mobile as Jake is and that has the ability with his athleticism to create plays for you on offense, you have to allow him to play the game. At the same point in time you want him to play the game smart. Jake has to know when he needs to take hits off of his body, when it's ok to get out of bounds, when he needs to get down when he is downfield. And then we have got to do a better job protecting him."

On the most important thing UW has to do to succeed this year:

"We have got to come off the ball up front and move people so that we can get the running game going. If we can't run the football we are going to struggle. The biggest thing is that those guys have got to be able to move the defense front for us to have success. I mean I don't know any level of football where the game is not won in the front seven."

On what goes into the preparation for UW's first game against LSU:

"You know it's a little different we are really watching two sets of films right now because of their situation on defense with their new coordinator coming over from Tennessee. We are really watching schematically Tennessee style of defense and then we are trying to match it to LSU film where we are watching really personnel and the strengths of their players. Definitely a lot of film watching going on, there is more than traditionally because you really are studying two different people. I think for our players the approach right now has to be to get better at what we do. Our approach as coaches has to be one, we got to get better at what we do but we also have got to have our eye on LSU and what kind of schemes we are going to need to beat them and how we are going to implement those with our players throughout training camp."
