Lindy's take on the Huskies
Posted by Bob Condotta
In our continuing series of breaking down how the pre-season magazines are breaking down the Huskies, we today look at Lindy's.
In the interest of full disclosure, I do some work for Lindy's, writing the Husky preview and contributing to their overall Pac-10 coverage, though the editors there have final say on all the all-conference selections, the order of teams, etc.
Anyway, like just about every other prediction I've seen so far, Lindy's has UW ninth in the Pac-10 this year.
Here's their order:
1, USC
2, Cal
3, Oregon
4, Oregon State
5, Arizona
6, UCLA
7, Stanford
8, Arizona State
9, Washington
10, Washington State
Having been involved in some of the discussions, there was a lot of back-and-forth on teams four-through-eight. But the first three and bottom two were pretty unanimous. We ultimately sided with OSU at No. 4 in large part due to the team's experience at QB. As for UW, as I've written on here before, I understand completely why fans are feeling more optimistic, and think that you should --- it's part of the fun of being a fan. However, looking at it realistically from the outside, it's hard to make a strong case for them ahead of anyone but WSU right now.
The overall assessment of UW reads this way: "More competitive, maybe even an upset or two, but still a long road back to the top.''
Lindy's looked a little more kindly on UW on its all-conference team, however. Daniel Te'o-Nesheim was a first-team pick at DE and Jake Locker, Ryan Tolar and Mason Foster were all second-team picks.
Locker also won the honor of "strongest arm'' and "toughest to bring down.''
Locker was also listed as the seventh-best NFL prospect in the Pac-10.
Cal's Jahvid Best was named as the MVP with OSU's Jacquizz Rodgers named the Offensive Player of the Year, USC's Taylor Mays the Defensive Player of the Year and Kevin Prince of UCLA --- slated to be the team's starting QB --- named the Newcomer of the Year.
All of this is from the Lindy's national college football preview magazine. The specialized Pac-10 issue, which features more detailed reports on every conference team, will be out at the end of this month.
