UW quarterback Jake Locker has just been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, going to the Angels with the last pick of the 10th round, No. 321 overall.

He's listed as a center fielder.

Locker has been adamant that he will concentrate on football the rest of his career at UW, so this seems more likely to be a deal where the Angels take a flier and see what happens down the road or something. The Angels must really like Locker as they also took him in the 40th round of the 2006 draft following his senior year of high school, after he had signed with UW and said he planned to attend college.

I wrote this post last week detailing the high esteem in which Locker is held by Major League scouts and there's no doubt baseball is a legitimate option for him down the road should football not work out.

But again, as he's quoted in that entry, and many other places of late, he has been clear that football is what he plans to do for now.

Locker also made that point clearly last April when he said he had no plans to play baseball of any sort this summer, saying "football is where I want to go.''

Interestingly, this guy here predicted late last month that the Angels would again select Locker.

And to answer an obvious question, Locker could sign a contract with the Angels and still play QB for the Huskies. NCAA rules allow for a player to be a pro in one sport while retaining college eligibility in another. That's been done quite a few times with football player who played pro baseball. Tripper Johnson, current UW safety, is a good example, having played minor league baseball for eight years before returning to college to play football.

UPDATE --- And Times baseball expert Larry Stone informs me that the Angels will hold Locker's rights only until Aug. 17. That rule changed last year (it's supposed to be Aug. 15, but since that's a Saturday this year, they extended the signing deadline until Aug. 17. No more draft-and-follows. Players must be signed by Aug. 17, or they go back into the draft the next year.

Also, word is Locker was expecting this to happen and is likely to address this publicly a little later today.
