Willingham still raking it in

Posted by Bob Condotta

Interesting story from the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette today detailing the release of payroll figures from Notre Dame.

The numbers for the 2007-08 fiscal year reveal that Tyrone Willingham remained on the UND payroll, despite having been fired in December of 2004, making $650,000 from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. That was the third straight year he had been on the payroll after having been fired.

Since Notre Dame is a private school, it doesn't have to release salary figures, with the newspaper getting them only through tax forms. So there's no way of knowing if that's all the school will pay Willingham or if he will show up on the payroll again next year.

But if you assume he got half that in 2008, Willingham was one of the most well-paid coaches anywhere last season.

He also got at least $1,439,016 in guaranteed salary from UW last year, and could have earned another roughly $110,000 in academic incentives (he obviously didn't get any of the performance incentives).

And he also was due a $1 million lump sum payment due within 30 days of his "date of termination.''

So giving him half the Notre Dame money and assuming he got all the UW money as schedule, that means he got at least $2.825 million last year.

Which averages out to, well, zero dollars per win (but about $235,000 per loss).
