Scouting report: Washington at Brigham Young
Huskies are looking to snap a 12-game road losing streak, and hoping to get a season of high expectations off on the right foot. A big game for Jake Locker could also serve as an early boost to all the Heisman talk. BYU went 11-2 last season but is in major rebuilding mode.
Time: 4 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium
TV: CBS College Sports. Radio: 950 AM. The line: BYU by 3.
The setup: Huskies are looking to snap a 12-game road losing streak, and hoping to get a season of high expectations off on the right foot. A big game for Jake Locker could also serve as an early boost to all the Heisman talk. BYU went 11-2 last season but is in major rebuilding mode.
What to expect: The Huskies' offense could be among the most explosive in the Pac-10. They'll try to control the game on the ground with Locker and tailback Chris Polk. BYU will go with two inexperienced quarterbacks — junior Riley Nelson and frosh Jake Heaps of Skyline. Look for UW to try to bring some pressure.
Notes: UW holds a 4-3 edge in the series, but BYU won the most recent meeting, 28-27 in 2008 — a game best remembered for an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on Locker for flinging the ball in the air after scoring a last-second TD. Moved 15 yards back, UW had its tying PAT try blocked. ... BYU is 22-2 in its past 24 home games, but was 4-2 last season. ... UW coach Steve Sarkisian will be one of eight former BYU quarterbacks honored by the school. It's unclear if Sarkisian will attend the halftime ceremony.
Injuries: UW — RB Deontae Cooper (knee, out for season); MLB Brandon Huppert (knee), DE Kalani Aldrich (knee) questionable; WR James Johnson (ankle), CB Greg Ducre (shoulder) probable; BYU — TE Devin Mahina (ankle) questionable; OL Ryan Freeman (knee), DE Robbie Buckner (hand), WR Cody Hoffman (hamstring) probable.
Upset brewing? BYU is favored by three, which essentially means the oddsmakers are calling it even except for the Cougars being at home. So it will hardly be an upset should UW win.
Key matchup: UW QB Jake Locker vs. BYU safety Andrew Rich. Strong safety Rich will likely get the job of shadowing Locker and making sure he doesn't go crazy with his legs.
Prediction: Washington, 31-23.
