Washington accepts bid to Women's Basketball Invitational

The Huskies (12-17) accepted an invitation to play in the new Women's Basketball Invitational, a 16-team tournament with a base cost of $10,000 to host a game. Washington will play Portland (18-12) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Edmundson Pavilion.

Washington swapped its tears for one more run.

The Huskies (12-17) accepted an invitation to play in the new Women's Basketball Invitational, a 16-team tournament with a base cost of $10,000 to host a game. Washington will play Portland (18-12) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Edmundson Pavilion.

It's a surprise turnaround for the Huskies, who crumbled against Oregon State in a 52-42 loss in their Pac-10 tournament opener on Thursday. Sophomore guard Kristi Kingma could barely speak afterward, wondering if the teammates she grew close to over the season would ever play together again.

"There's some new life put in us," said the Huskies' Tia Jackson, who is making her first postseason appearance as coach. "I don't know that we've gotten over the Oregon State game. It kind of sits in our stomach a little bit, and it should.

"This reminds me of our men, when they were invited to the CBI (in 2008). They got an opportunity to extend their season. They might not have gotten what they wanted out of the tournament, but the next two years, they're Pac-10 champions. You want your players, especially the young ones, to experience it."

The WBI is split into two eight-team regions, with games played on the campus of the higher seed.

But if the Huskies win Wednesday, they would travel to either play Cal State Bakersfield or Texas A&M Corpus Christi on March 20 or 21 because Edmundson Pavilion is an NCAA tournament first-round site this weekend.
