Washington senior Quincy Pondexter won the Pac-10 Player of the Week award Monday joining Gary Payton, Chris Mills, Ed O'Bannon and Eddie House as the only players to win the award four times in a single season.
"To even be in the same breath or sentence as those guys, it is such a huge accomplishment," said Pondexter, who averaged 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds last week in wins over Arizona and Arizona State. "They're all legends.
"Being from the West Coast and being a fan of Pac-10 basketball, I never thought I was on the same plateau as them. It's such an honor."
The conference began the weekly award in 1983. Payton won it four times at Oregon State during the 1989-90 season. Other four-time winners were Mills (Arizona) in '92-93, O'Bannon (UCLA) in '94-95 and House (Arizona State) in '99-2000.
No one has won it five times in a season.
"It all comes with team success," he said. "I think that's the most important thing. It is real mind-boggling to have a chance to make history. I'm real surprised by everything that's happening right now. Everything has been a real blessing and I'm enjoying every moment of it."
Pondexter is third in the conference in scoring (20.6) and rebounding (8.3), fifth in free-throw percentage (82 percent) and field-goal percentage (55 percent) and eighth in steals (1.43).
Pondexter moved past James Edwards into sixth place with 1,154 points on UW's all-time scoring list. Pondexter trails Eldridge Recasner, who will be induced in the Pac-10 Hall of Honor next month, by 146 points.
"Me and Eldridge are cool," Pondexter said. "He's given me great advice every since I got to the University of Washington. He joked around with me a couple of times saying he might beat me up if I pass him on the scoring list, but I told him I was going to get it done."
Each player who has won the weekly award four times in one season went on to win the player of the year award.
"I just can't believe that it's all happening like it is," Pondexter said. "It's such a dream come true. I can't really explain how much it means to me and my family."
