Coach Lorenzo Romar wanted more offensive balance and No. 24 Washington responded as four players scored in double figures in an 89-54 victory against Portland.

The Huskies had been led by the 1-2 punch of Quincy Pondexter and Isaiah Thomas, who were the only teammates in the nation averaging at least 20 points.

In front of 9,275 on Saturday at Edmundson Pavilion, UW's stars shined bright, but they shared the spotlight with a cadre of reserves that overwhelmed Portland.

Washington, which lost to No. 11 Georgetown in its previous game, displayed no effects of a Hoyas hangover and Thomas looked nothing like someone who suffered a concussion seven days.

Thomas finished with 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting and a season-high eight assists. Pondexter connected on 8 of 13 shots for a game-high 17 points.

As good as its leading scorers were, UW's role players and suffocating defense proved to be the difference.

Scott Suggs added a career-high 15 points and Venoy Overton chipped in 11 off the bench.

The Huskies (7-2) also scored 35 points off 22 turnovers.

The Pilots upset the Huskies 80-74 in last season's opener at the Chiles Center and narrowly lost 67-63 at Washington in 2007.

Portland (6-4) beat Oregon and UCLA and entered the game as one of the hottest shooting three-point teams in the country.

Washington took away the Pilots' long-ball offense and didn't allow a three-pointer until three minutes had expired in the second half.

The Huskies scored first and never trailed. They raced ahead 16-2 and took a 47-17 lead into halftime.

Up by 30 points at intermission, Washington was looking for its biggest victory since its 111-55 win against Portland State last month.

The Pilots made a few runs in the second half, but Suggs connected on a few big shots to keep the Huskies comfortably ahead.
