Washington

player of the game

Huskies linebacker Mason Foster caught a pass that deflected off Arizona receiver Delashaun Dean's foot and ran the ball back 37 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:37 to play.

Arizona player

of the game

Arizona quarterback Nick Foles expertly led the Wildcats' diverse passing offense in just his second career start, throwing for 384 yards, completing 39 of 53 passes. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for a score on a bootleg.

Play of the game

OK, other than Foster's interception, that is. In the first quarter, Washington quarterback Jake Locker escaped an Arizona blitz and ran 56 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7. Arizona linebacker Vuna Tuihalamaka tried to tackle Locker high and failed, and Locker then escaped from linebacker Xavier Kelley and dashed to the end zone.

Injuries

Washington starting left guard Greg Christine left in the second quarter with what appeared to be a serious lower leg injury. He was taken off on a golf cart. Tailback Chris Polk left for a while in the first half with a shoulder injury but returned. Defensive tackle Cameron Elisara left in the fourth quarter with what looked like a shoulder injury.

Wide receiver D'Andre Goodwin, who suffered on a concussion on the final play of the Notre Dame game, did not suit up. He is expected to be ready for the game at Arizona State, as is Williams.

Freshmen get chance

In the spring, Nate Fellner figured he might be watching this game from his living room in Fresno, Calif.

Instead, after injuries in Washington's secondary, he was starting at free safety, a rather meteoric rise for the 6-foot-1, 198-pound freshman from Clovis High School.

Fellner signed with UW last February as part of the Class of 2009, one of just three players who committed under former coach Tyrone Willingham to end up coming to Washington.

But a couple months later, when new Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian thought he might have too many players to fit into 85 scholarship spots, he asked Fellner if he would be agreeable to grayshirting.

In May, after the Huskies had a couple of players leave for academic reasons, the coaches called Fellner and told him there was a spot for him this year, after all.

Another freshman, Demitrius Bronson from Kentwood, moved into the backup role at running back because Johri Fogerson was out with the flu. Bronson carried twice for 4 yards.
