Energy, enthusiasm, excitement

1And whatever adjective you want to supply to indicate a rebirth. This was a defeated team in every area from about week four of last season and what's hard to know is how bad UW really was last year, and how much of how bad they looked was because there was no life left in the coaches and players. What's unquestioned is that this team will play harder and more together than a year ago.

Keeping Jake Locker healthy

2As bad as UW was last season, it's worth remembering how close the Huskies were to beating BYU when Locker was healthy and playing well. The season went completely to waste once he was injured. He remains the most important player on this team and he has to be smart about how he risks his body, and the coaches smart about how they use him.

Forging a successful offensive line

3UW coaches indicated their concern over the line this week with some changes in the depth chart, and it's likely the shuffling could continue. But wherever the pieces ultimately rest, the Huskies have to get some push up front to get a running game going and protect Locker. There is reason for optimism in the return of three players with 66 career starts — tackles Ben Ossai and Cody Habben and center Ryan Tolar.

Finding answers in the secondary

4UW's defensive front has been pretty stable all camp, and has some established players such as DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and all three linebackers to give it some credibility. But the secondary remains a bigger concern with the possibility of starting a true freshman, Desmond Trufant, at one cornerback spot. Good news? Pac-10 might not be quite the passing league this year it has been in the past.

Not kicking away games

5UW might have won two games last year — BYU and WSU — with just passable kicking games. And it has been a while since the Huskies could say they won a game because of their special teams. The new coaches have made the special teams a priority, but kicker Erik Folk has been inconsistent in camp.
