Day 5 highlights
5 questions with ...
Drew SchaeferRT, 6-4, 291, redshirt freshman
Schaefer, a graduate of Eastlake High, redshirted last year but then surprised many by ascending to the starting right-tackle job at the end of spring practice.
Seattle Times: There has been lots of talk about how well offseason conditioning went and how different a lot of guys look physically. Do you think that will pay off down the road?
Schaefer: [Strength] coach [Ivan] Lewis ran one of the most intense programs we've all been through. But we were all dedicated to it. I think all the hard work we put in shows. We are faster, bigger and stronger, and it's going to make us a more athletic and explosive and dynamic team.
ST: A lot of the offensive linemen lost weight, but yours is reported to have gone up from 275 to about 288. Is that accurate?
Schaefer: I'm actually about 291, 292. I put on a little more muscle so I feel really good. I kept my speed — I didn't lose any speed when I gained weight in the offseason, and I feel really comfortable right now.
ST: A lot of people were kind of surprised that you were named the starter at right tackle in the spring. Did it surprise you, and are you comfortable with it right now?
Schaefer: I feel really comfortable right now. One of the main reasons I came to Washington was to compete and play in big games and to win, and I've done everything in my power to get to that point. And the coaches have given me a great opportunity, and I'm doing my best to take advantage of it.
ST: Were you a UW fan growing up?
Schaefer: I moved out here in the fourth grade, and ever since then I've followed the home team. It's time to get them back to glory.
ST: With all the offseason work you guys do in the summer, doesn't sound like there's necessarily a lot of down time.
Schaefer: This is what we came here to do. It's a full-time job. But we made it fun. You have to. And that was one thing that was big was not only the physical changes we made but the camaraderie we built and the trust we built in each other.

What happened
Washington held its first practice of the fall in full pads, in front of a couple hundred fans.
Day for defense
The defense seemed to get the better of things, particularly during a final 11-on-11 session.
"I think our [line]backers really showed up today," coach Steve Sarkisian said. "I thought all three of those guys [Donald Butler, E.J. Savannah, Mason Foster], you could feel their presence today. And I thought [defensive end] Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, you could really feel his presence today. Those guys are physical players in full pads, and they really brought it today."
What's next
UW will hold its first two-a-days today, the first at 8:45 a.m. and the second at 6:45 p.m. Both are at Husky Stadium and open to the public.
