Jason WellsS, 6-2, 214, Sr.
Wells was a starter at free safety for most of 2006 and all of 2007 before suffering a knee injury in the fifth game of the 2007 season against USC. He sat out last season while recovering, then suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the offseason.
Seattle Times: So when's the last time you were able to take part in a practice?
Wells: I ran with the scout [team] a couple times in the middle of last year but I didn't really fully participate since last [fall].
ST: How did it feel?
Wells: I was cramping up a little bit but that's going to happen right now since I'm still not in perfect shape.
ST: But otherwise you don't really feel the affects of any of your injuries?
Wells: Not really. I'm just trying to fight through everything, but I'm not really worried that I won't be able to do everything. I just have to step up and compete and try hard.
ST: How did the Achilles injury occur?
Wells: It was just a regular team run [during offseason conditioning] and I just came down wrong and stepped on my right leg and it just popped.
ST: How do you feel about the competition at safety?
Wells: I'm just happy to be out here, really, to experience it and to be able to be around this coaching staff and everything else.

What happened
About 300 people attended UW's first practice of the fall at Husky Stadium.
Trufant sidelined
Incoming freshman cornerback Desmond Trufant of Wilson High — the younger brother of Seahawk Marcus Trufant — did not participate in practice Monday after the NCAA Clearinghouse ruled it would not accept one of his high-school courses. UW coach Steve Sarkisian said Trufant is a good student and that "this is just an issue that the NCAA didn't accept a class that his school had (approved) as an acceptable class." He is retaking a class to fill the gap and could be back on the field in a week or two.
