Huskies make it official with four more football coaches

Coach Steve Sarkisian has hired eight assistants; Utah's Aaron Roderick rumored as candidate for last spot, receivers coach.

The Washington Huskies announced the hiring of four more assistant football coaches Thursday amid rumblings that the staff is nearing completion.

All of the hirings announced Thursday had previously been reported and confirmed in the media — linebackers coach Mike Cox, safeties coach Jeff Mills, running backs coach Joel Thomas and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

All four were given two-year contracts with Cox and Nussmeier making $200,000 per year, Thomas $150,000 and Mills $145,000.

There were also various reports the Huskies were close to filling the last opening on the staff with receivers coach Aaron Roderick, who currently holds the same position at Utah. While there was one report that Roderick had been hired, he told The Salt Lake Tribune via text message that he was in Seattle considering the position but had not made a decision.

Roderick is thought to be a candidate to become the offensive coordinator should he stay in Salt Lake City.

Roderick played at BYU in 1996 when UW coach Steve Sarkisian was the team's quarterback.

Teams are allowed nine assistant coaches and UW has now announced the hiring of eight. All have at least two-year contracts, with coordinators Jim Michalczik (offense) and Nick Holt (defense) each receiving three-year deals. It will apparently be the first time in UW history that every assistant on the staff will have a multiyear deal, allowing the coaches a degree of stability as they attempt to rebuild the program after coach Tyrone Willingham and his staff were fired following this year's 0-12 season. None of Willingham's assistants were retained.
