PALO ALTO, Calif. — Washington's women's basketball team wants to rejoin the upper echelon of the Pac-10 Conference, but Thursday night Stanford showed the Huskies how far they have to go.

The 11th-ranked Cardinal overwhelmed the Huskies at Maples Pavilion, beating Washington, 112-35. It was the worst defeat in the history of UW women's basketball, both for margin of victory and points allowed, surpassing a 109-51 licking the Huskies took at the hands of top-ranked Connecticut on Dec. 18.

It was also the largest margin of victory in conference history.

Stanford (12-3 overall, 3-0 Pac-10) probably could have picked any number it wanted to put on the scoreboard. The Huskies (5-7, 1-1) seemed incapable of doing anything about it.

The Huskies were missing a few key players because of injury, including starting shooting guard Kristi Kingma and reserve Sara Mosiman.

"There is a lesson we can learn," Washington coach Tia Jackson said. "We have had games like this before. We lost to Connecticut and then we turned around and upset a team [Florida State] the next day. We are definitely feeling good about making sure our team can bounce back."

Stanford's Rosalyn Gold-Onwude showed the Huskies what they were in for by burying a pair of three-point shots to start the game, followed by a layin from dominating center Jayne Appel.

Stanford added six more points to make it 14-0 before Washington could score. Stanford scored in bunches while the Huskies managed isolated baskets to briefly interrupt Cardinal runs. They did not collect consecutive scores until midway through the second half.

The margin grew to 23-2, then 62-15 by halftime.

The Huskies shot 21 percent from the floor (13 of 62) for the game.

The Cardinal had 18 assists with their first 21 baskets, and shot 65.6 percent in the first half, 57 percent for the game. They were 14 for 25 from three-point range. They probably didn't need to outrebound the Huskies, but they did anyway, 55-27.

Washington's leading scorer was Sarah Morton, who had seven points.

This was Stanford's sixth straight win over Washington and 10th in the past 11 meetings. The Huskies' last win at Stanford was almost 10 years ago, Feb. 18, 1999.

And it doesn't get any easier for the Huskies, in the middle of a Bay Area visit. Washington faces 13th-ranked California in Berkeley on Sunday. That game will be televised nationally on FSN at 12:30 p.m.

"We know what we are capable of," guard Sami Whitcomb said. "That is the toughest part of games like this. We know we are capable of a lot more."
