UW vs. Stanford preview

At stake: In what is suddenly a wide-open Pac-10 race, the loser of this game will be one of the few teams just about out of it as each already has one conference loss. For UW, the implications are also huge for coach Tyrone Willingham as an 0-4 start might be too big a hole to get out of and salvage the winning season thought necessary to keep his job. Stanford also looks at this as a key game in its hopes to get to six wins and a bowl this season.

What to expect: Stanford's offensive strength is its running game, led by powerful TB Toby Gerhart. Expect him to get 25 carries today as the Cardinal tries to exploit UW's weak run defense. But Stanford will also look for chances to use the running game to set up some big passing plays. UW is coming off a bye week and could have some new wrinkles on both offense and defense, especially involving some of the younger players. UW will also look to make some big plays against Stanford's blitzing defense.

Notes: UW has gone 21-4 against Stanford since 1976. But the Cardinal won the most recent meeting in Seattle, a 20-3 victory in 2006 that is one of the low moments in recent Huskies history. UW is 12-1 against the Cardinal at home since 1977. UW beat the Cardinal 27-9 last year in Palo Alto. ... Stanford freshman RB Delano Howell is the younger brother of former Husky Dan Howell. ... Former Bellevue High School star David DeCastro is listed as the backup center for the Cardinal, though he has yet to play this season. ... Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard is a graduate of Clover Park High School in Lakewood. ... Stanford and UW first played in 1893, making this the longest rivalry of any Pac-10 school for the Huskies (UW and WSU didn't play until 1900).

Injuries: UW — RB Chris Polk (shoulder) out for season; WR Chancellor Young (knee), S Jason Wells (knee), S Darin Harris (concussion), CB Byron Davenport (ankle) out. Stanford — WR Chris Owusu (knee), S Austin Yancy (hamstring), LG Gustav Rydstedt (concussion) out.

Prediction: This looms as a must-win for the Huskies if they want to keep their hopes alive of a winning season — not to mention what it means for the future of Willingham. The Huskies have had two weeks to heal after the Oklahoma game and get their younger players better. The Huskies need to make some big plays early and keep Stanford's running game in check. But if that happens, the home-field advantage should lift UW to its first win of the season. UW 28, Stanford 17.
