Huskies beat SU in volleyball

Seattle University volleyball coach Shannon Ellis likes to imagine that what has happened at the University of Washington might be repeated at her crosstown campus.
It just may take awhile, as evidenced Thursday night by Washington's swift and decisive 3-0 sweep of the Redhawks in front of 1,148 at Edmundson Pavilion. The 10th-ranked Huskies (8-1) simply overpowered SU 25-9, 25-14, 25-11.
A Division II program a year ago, Seattle U. (2-10) is making a fearless leap into Division I. UW is the fifth Pac-10 opponent Seattle U. has faced this season after already being swept by UCLA (currently ranked No. 4), Oregon (No. 12) and Oregon State. The Redhawks were edged 3-2 by Washington State on Aug. 30.
"It's a huge challenge," Ellis said. "We're not afraid of it, but we know we have a lot of work to do."
UW coach Jim McLaughlin inherited a losing team when he arrived in 2001 but turned the Huskies into national champions by 2005.
The Huskies, who entered the match ranked No. 2 in the nation in hitting percentage (.351), hit a torrid .439 against Seattle U. Sophomore outside hitter Kinda Carlson topped UW with 13 kills.
Notes
• UW hosts 17th-ranked University of San Diego (9-1) tonight at 7.
• Seattle U. hosts an exhibition against Zhejiang of China tonight at 7 and then USD at noon Saturday.
