Notebook | Sharpshooting Appleby lifts Huskies with threes

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Washington guard Ryan Appleby missed a free throw before UW's game at Oregon State had even started Saturday, a rarity for the sharpshooter.

He was at the line after the Beavers were assessed a technical for getting their lineup in too late, making one of two.

But he hardly missed again, sinking a school-record nine three-pointers in 15 attempts in leading Washington to a 97-59 win over Oregon State here Saturday.

Unlike most UW opponents of late, Oregon State played Appleby pretty much straight-up, allowing him to get more open than usual.

"The shots were there and I got some good looks," he said. "It's been tough this year to get some good looks. A lot of teams have face-guarded me and doubled me on screens and made it tough for me to get looks."

But OSU almost never did; Appleby hit 5 of 8 threes in the first half and four more in the second to break a record he had tied earlier in the year.

Appleby's previous career high was 24, set last season against Southern Utah. It was the most points for any UW player since Brandon Roy scored 35 against Arizona on Dec. 31, 2005.

He has 211 three-pointers for his career, one behind the school mark set by Deon Luton, who played from 1996 to 2000.

"I remember watching Shootin' Luton play, so it would be kind of nice to break it," he said.

Thomas still waiting

Huskies recruit Isaiah Thomas, the former Curtis High standout, has still not gotten a qualifying SAT score. Thomas is now attending South Kent (Ct.) Prep School, where he went to shore up his academics and delayed signing with UW for a year.

Another Washington signee, guard Elston Turner Jr. of Houston, is also shy of eligibility for next season. UW coaches remain confident that both will be eligible next season.

Giles watches

Former Rainier Beach center C.J. Giles watched the game from the stands and was sitting in the bleachers near the Huskies' bench as the game ended.

He was kicked off the Oregon State roster by interim coach Kevin Mouton following the firing of Jay John — his last game was the Beavers' loss to Washington in Seattle last month.

But he said he is still in school and hoping that the new coach will allow him back on the team.

"I think I have a pretty good chance because I didn't do nothing [to warrant getting kicked off]," he said. "So I'm just going to sit here and wait."

Giles said he attends every game, "supporting my team."
