Notebook | Ex-Beach star Giles has a short day's work

The game wasn't a minute old when Oregon State's C.J. Giles picked up two fouls and headed to the bench. But he momentarily turned in the wrong direction before finally finding his way to the Beavers' sideline.

It was that kind of day for the 6-foot-11 Giles, the former Rainier Beach High School star, who finished with just three points in 11 minutes before fouling out in Washington's 83-74 Pac-10 victory over the Beavers on Saturday at Edmundson Pavilion.

His final play proved his most memorable moment, as he got tangled with Washington forward Jon Brockman with 1:05 left, earning each a technical foul. Giles fouled out.

Brockman had fallen to the floor after trying to take a charge on a drive from Josh Tarver. Giles ended up above Brockman beginning a minor melee that saw Tarver, Giles and Brockman all hit with technicals.

"He jumped up and got tripped and he was going to land on me so I kind of stuck my feet out trying to catch him," Brockman said of Giles. "I wanted to make sure he didn't land on me."

Giles, however, thought the 6-7 Brockman was kicking at him.

"I tried to catch myself and he started kicking up and then when I turned and looked, Quincy Pondexter came and pushed me," Giles said. "I was like, 'What's going on?' And then they called the T on me. I have no idea why."

Brockman was surprised but believed officials felt that "they had to do something" to get the game under control.

Brockman said it was his first technical other than one while playing at Snohomish High for hanging on the rim.

Romar said, "Jon never loses his temper for more than half-a-second. But when you play as physical a game as he does, I'm surprised there are not more skirmishes."

Brockman said he and Giles shared a quick hug after the game.

"Me and C.J. have been playing against each other forever," Brockman said, "and what happens on the court stays on the court."

Notes

• The loss, though competitive, will likely add to questions about the future of Oregon State coach Jay John, with some Oregon media speculating he could be fired this week. John said afterward he wasn't concerned and didn't think it had any impact on his team.

"I don't read the articles," John said. "I don't know any of what's being talked about."

• Washington's Venoy Overton said later that Oregon State's Marcel Jones was the Beaver player doing the most talking before and during the game. "Even his teammates were like, 'Don't worry about him. He's all talk,' " Overton said. Jones worked out in Seattle and often played in pickup games at UW for a few months last spring while debating whether to turn pro.

• Brockman, a junior, had 47 points and 30 rebounds over the weekend, leading Overton to wonder if he might be playing too well right now. Asked about the team's future next season, Overton said, "Hopefully he's still around next year. He's putting up big numbers right now."

Brockman has all but said he's sure to return next season, but hasn't completely ruled out entering the NBA draft early.

• Huskies guard Justin Dentmon lost part of a his right front tooth after taking an elbow from Josh Tarver. Trainers glued on a replacement.
