Seattle Times staff reporter

Bradly Roussel, a linebacker from Baton Rouge, La., who appeared ready to become the first Washington Husky from SEC territory since receiver Charles Frederick, is instead headed to Tulane.

Roussel, a 5-foot-11, 215-pounder, had given a public commitment to UW in mid-December after a home visit from UW assistant coach Chris Tormey. Frederick, a Florida native, played at UW from 2001-2004.

However, Roussel's father, Holenn, said during his son's official visit to Washington two weekends ago that Huskies coaches wanted to wait a couple of weeks before making the offer official. Washington is recruiting other linebackers. Most notable among those is Donovan Carter of Van Nuys, Calif., who earlier committed to UCLA but is now weighing other offers and visited UW last weekend.

Holenn Roussel said his son had a written offer, but also said "there is no animosity, there are no hard feelings. Things happen in recruiting. Both parties are comfortable with the way the situation was left."

While UW remained interested, Roussel visited Tulane last weekend and has now given a commitment to the Green Wave, a member of Conference USA.

Reece, Rankin to play in all-star game

Former Huskies running back Louis Rankin and receiver Marcel Reece have each been named to play in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 2. The game pits college players who have finished their eligibility and are originally from Texas vs. those who hail from other parts of the country.

The game is set for 2 p.m. and will be televised on CSTV.
