Tuesday's game at a glance

Player of the game: Make it co-players. Jon Brockman did the heavy lifting for the Huskies, scoring 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting to go with 12 rebounds. Ryan Appleby hit seven of his 11 attempted three-pointers, tying the UW mark for distance makes.

Turning point: After a first half dominated by the long-distance prowess of both teams, the Huskies began to dominate inside early in the second half, and their inside-out balance was the difference in the game.

Digits: Washington shot 61.8 percent, negating a good-shooting, 52 percent night by PSU. The Vikings hit 50 percent from three-point range but missed their last seven.

Next: Cal State-Northridge, 3 p.m. Saturday, Edmundson Pavilion, FSN

Ryan Appleby continues to show Washington fans what the Huskies missed when he sat out until the Pittsburgh loss Dec. 8 with a fractured thumb.

Appleby gunned in 7 of 11 three-point attempts Tuesday night against Portland State, tying the UW record for made threes. Senque Carey and Deon Luton also had seven for Bob Bender's 1999 and 1998 teams, respectively.

"If I set a record, I set a record, but I'm not conscious of any," Appleby said with a shrug.

Surely the Vikings would say Appleby had no conscience. One of his shots was a 25-footer, another was an off-balance twister that broke a tie and gave Washington the lead for good.

"When he shoots it like that, he's pretty darned good," said Portland State coach Ken Bone.

PSU guard Mickey Polis marveled, "That quick release ... I've never seen anybody like that."

Since his injury absence, Appleby has nailed 17 of 31 three-point attempts.

Wallace improves

Artem Wallace, who didn't play at all in two earlier games, got his second consecutive start. Coach Lorenzo Romar said Wallace's conditioning has improved, enabling him to begin performing better in games and practices, particularly on defense. Wallace put on a little weight in the early fall after suffering a hamstring injury.

"His conditioning had him behind," Romar said. "But as a result of other guys not really doing as much as we'd like in game situations, he got his opportunity in the [Pittsburgh] game and he produced, and along with the next week of practice he was rewarded with that. He's fine, defensively."

Wallace had four points and three rebounds in 22 minutes.

Getting games

Portland State will return to UW again next season, the finale of a three-year deal the two schools signed after Bone, a former Huskies assistant and longtime Seattle Pacific coach, became coach. Romar says he's reluctant to play teams coached by former assistants but wanted to help out Bone, who said the visits to Seattle are important for his program.

Bone said he has talked with Seattle University coach Joe Callero about a series, dovetailing with the Redhawks' gradual move to Division I.

NOTES

• Portland State welcomed back 5-foot-6 guard Jeremiah Dominguez after a one-game sit-out because of an academic-eligibility ruling. Dominguez, a Salem product, transferred from University of Portland. He immediately made his presence felt, starting and scoring eight first-half points.
