Sami Whitcomb scored 21 points and Heidi McNeill pulled down 15 rebounds to help make Tia Jackson's head-coaching debut a success, as the Washington women's basketball team cruised to an 84-59 exhibition win over Love & Basketball on Saturday in front of 1,053 at Edmundson Pavilion.
Whitcomb, a sophomore guard, sank three of five three-point attempts to lead five Huskies who scored in double figures. One of them was the 6-foot-3 McNeill, a junior from Oak Harbor who played just 45 minutes last season, and only 90 in her freshman year.
Saturday, McNeill played 35 minutes and recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in the first half. She finished with 14 points, second only to Whitcomb's 21, and 15 boards.
UW outrebounded Love & Basketball, a touring squad of ex-collegians, 63-39 despite facing a starting front line of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-4 players.
Prized 6-5 freshman Jess McCormark, a member of the New Zealand Olympic team, picked up two fouls in the first three minutes and played just 15 minutes. She finished with two points.
