What happened: The Huskies held a split practice, with half the team working in the early afternoon and the other half in the late afternoon. It's an approach Tyrone Willingham has used during his time at Washington to get all the players more reps. The team merges in between workouts to practice special teams together.
Injury report: Willingham elaborated Monday to say that incoming freshman DL Nick Wood had a pre-existing wrist injury that required surgery once he arrived on campus earlier this summer. He is out 2-4 weeks and is likely headed to a redshirt season. Otherwise, the Huskies have suffered no new injuries through the first two days of camp.
Counting them up: The Huskies are at 77 scholarship players, eight below the NCAA limit. Willingham said most teams are rarely at the full 85 during a season but that he would ideally like for the Huskies to have a few more on scholarship. "You want to get 85 but you want to get there the right way," he said.
Switching numbers: New cornerback Byron Davenport wore No. 25 on the first day of practice Sunday, the number worn by Curtis Williams, who was paralyzed in a game in 2000 and later died of complications of those injuries. It has rarely been worn since — for a year or two, the Huskies gave it out to a specific player as an honor to Williams — and is unofficially retired at the moment. Davenport was apparently handed the number because it was his locker number and he switched on Monday to 18.
What's next: The Huskies will again hold one practice without pads this afternoon. Willingham said the team will not put on full pads until Thursday, per NCAA rules.
