Brandon Roy insisted he was "disappointed" in himself that he couldn't do more to prevent Washington's 96-95 double-overtime loss to Arizona at Edmundson Pavilion Saturday.
But he was the only one.
"Brandon Roy was unbelievable," said Arizona coach Lute Olson, who said it would be "wrong" if Roy isn't named as a Pac-10 Player of the Week this week along with Wildcats guard Hassan Adams, who led Arizona with 32 points.
Roy scored 35 points to tie his career high — set Thursday night against Arizona State — and also had 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
His two biggest shots came when he hit three-pointers at the end of regulation and the first overtime to keep UW alive.
The first came with 6.4 seconds left in regulation and tied the score at 81, a score that held up when Arizona couldn't get a shot off.
Roy dribbled the ball up the court and said he was supposed to pass to Mike Jensen. "But the play got messed up and everyone looked a little confused," Roy said. "I knew [Arizona defender] Chris Rodgers is a little smaller than me so he couldn't block my shot so I just pulled it and it was a blessing that it went in."
Saturday's game at a glance
Player of the game: Brandon Roy and Hassan Adams led their teams in every way imaginable. Roy tied his career high — set Thursday night against Arizona State — with 35 points, hitting three-pointers at the end of regulation and the first overtime. Adams scored a career-high 32 points, including eight in the two overtime periods, and hit 5 of 7 three-pointers.
Turning point: The Huskies had a chance to put it away, leading 40-27 at halftime. But Arizona hit its first four three-pointers of the second half, and it was a seesaw battle the rest of the way.
By the numbers:
1-15: Arizona's 3-point shooting in the first half
8-15: Arizona's 3-point shooting the rest of the game.
19: The number of ties (12) and lead changes (7).
19: UW's turnovers, 16 more than it had on Thursday night against ASU when it committed a school-record low of three.
Next: vs. Cornell, Monday, 7 p.m., Edmundson Pavilion
UW trailed 90-87 with 5.2 seconds left at the end of the first overtime and called a timeout after Mustafa Shakur hit one of two free throws.
"Coach [Lorenzo Romar] said to push it up the court, push it and pull it," Roy said.
So he got to the three-point line, pump-faked to get Arizona forward Marcus Williams off his feet and moved around Adams and let fly, sinking it as time ran out.
Olson faulted his team's defense on the first one but gave all credit to Roy on the second one.
"I thought our guys played that one just right," Olson said. "If someone is going to hit it, that is the kind of shot you want him to have to make."
NOTES
• Though the Huskies protested that they didn't think there was much contact on the play that sent Kirk Walters to the line for the winning free throw, Walters said otherwise. Walters was fouled by UW forward Jon Brockman in a tussle for a rebound of a shot missed by Arizona guard J.P. Prince. "He [Brockman] caught my left arm," Walters said. "I was just trying to go for the rebound and luckily it came to me and I got a chance to hit some free throws." Walters made one of two shots with 5.1 seconds left for the winning margin.
• Roy on the loss of the 32-game home-court winning streak: "Will [Conroy], Tre [Simmons], Nate [Robinson] — we feel like we let all those guys down. But I'm sure they are proud of us for doing what we've done."
