New Mexico has been added as one of the four teams that will play in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 10 in Anaheim, Calif., and the Lobos could be the opponent for the Washington men's basketball team.
UW coaches have confirmed the Huskies will play in the Classic, but not who their opponent will be. An official announcement could come next week.
Georgetown and UCLA are the other two teams selected for the Classic, and speculation is that they will face each other.
If the Huskies do face the Lobos, the game will feature some interesting subplots.
New Mexico's coach is former UW assistant Ritchie McKay, who played at Seattle Pacific and is the brother of former Huskies receiver Orlando McKay.
Also, UW senior forward Jamaal Williams played two years at New Mexico before transferring, saying a personality conflict with McKay was part of the reason.
Last season, the Lobos went 26-7, won the Mountain West Conference postseason tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament, where they lost in the first round to Villanova.
New Mexico will be in somewhat of a rebuilding mode next season, having lost its best player, forward Danny Granger, who was a senior.
