It seemed like an innocent gesture after Washington's basketball game with Arizona State on Sunday when former UW football player Terry Johnson gave one of his Chicago Bears jerseys to Nate Robinson, apparently as a reward for Robinson having been the leading scorer in the game.
But it may also have been an NCAA violation, UW athletic director Todd Turner said yesterday.
"We're checking into it," Turner said. "We're concerned about it and we're going to follow up on it appropriately."
Turner said UW officials weren't aware of the incident until reading about it in the newspaper yesterday.
If it is a violation, it would likely be for receiving an extra benefit. "This is a perfect example of how crazy the rules are," Turner said.
Turner said if it is a violation it would likely be "a secondary violation at worst." He said he doubted there would be any real penalty — such as a suspension — as long as Robinson returned the jersey.
Johnson, who attended McClintock High School in Tempe, Ariz., played one year of football with Robinson at Washington.
