The house: This Lake Washington waterfront home, set alongside the Burke-Gilman Trail in Northeast Seattle, is a dramatic example of modern custom architecture. Three stories tall, it has an open living/dining area that soars the full 36-foot height, displaying a panoramic lake view on one side, and a floating steel staircase on the other. It leads upstairs to a master suite whose long list of special features includes two fireplaces. Finishes are modern and low-maintenance: concrete and bamboo floors, granite counters, painted exposed steel, teak and beech woods.

The architect: W. Carlton Lambert. His biggest challenge was the poor soil quality along the 100 feet of waterfront. To counter this, he designed the house to rest on 115 4-inch steel pipes sunk 30 feet down.

The owner: Shaio-Yen Wu. The owner of a real-estate company, she desired an ultramodern home with large volumes of space, few rooms, lots of light and good spaces for entertaining and displaying her art collection. The result is a house that combines informality and luxury.

The contractor: John Lodwig of Rampart Custom Homes.

Judges' comments: "In the simplest terms, this is a party house. Large, multilevel open spaces and generous circulation paths draw people around the house. The finish materials and detailing are simple but elegant."

W. Carlton Lambert
The size: 5,400 square feet, three bedrooms, five baths.

Project cost: $1,656,696. (Includes all labor, materials, building permit fees, sales tax and architect, contractor and/or consultant fees. Excludes land cost.)

Tour hours: Noon to 4 p.m. today (Sunday) only.

Address: 10508 Riviera Place N.E., Seattle. Because this is a one-lane road with no parking, visitors will not be allowed to drive directly to the house. Instead, park due east of the house along Lake Shore Boulevard Northeast and follow open-house signs approximately three blocks to the house.

Driving directions: From Interstate 5 in Seattle, take Highway 520 to the Montlake Boulevard exit. Go north on Montlake to Northeast 45th Street. Angle to the right, passing south of University Village, until the street becomes Sand Point Way Northeast. Continue north to Northeast 100th Street. Turn right and go three blocks to Lake Shore Boulevard. Turn left and park along Lake Shore, then follow signs to the house, which is on Riviera Place, parallel to Lake Shore.

The Seattle Times/AIA Open House program began in 1954. All licensed architects are encouraged to submit their residential work to the AIA for consideration. Call 206-448-4938.
