Two Seattle architecture and design firms have been recognized by the American Institute of Architects with a "Show You're Green" excellence award for work on affordable green housing.
Runberg Architecture Group received the award for its Denny Park Apartments, in Seattle, while Mithun was lauded for an urban community in north Portland, New Columbia.
The Denny Park apartments are close to downtown and feature sustainable design choices such as planters that retain stormwater, siding and other materials with a long life and recycled plastic and wood composite decking, according to Runberg.
The 50-unit building includes a range of apartments from studios to three-bedroom, with apartments set aside for households below 30 percent median income, 50 percent and 60 percent.
The New Columbia community, which was developed by the Housing Authority of Portland, includes an innovative stormwater management system, public transit and sustainable building.
Judging was based on site design, water conservation and management, energy efficiency, reduced and sustainable material use and construction recycling, among other criteria.
