Distinguished by its "chick-a-dee-dee" song and its black cap, white cheeks and black bib. It's attracted to black-oil sunflower seeds.

Northern flicker
You may hear this woodpecker pounding on a metal roof. It is light brown with a black bib, spotted belly and red flashes on its wings. It likes suet but will eat fruit such as fallen apples.

Steller's jay
This bird is deep blue and black, with a shaggy crest on its head. The raucous Steller's jay mimics other birds. Peanuts will lure it to the yard.

Red-breasted nuthatch
Has a rusty red breast and slate gray on its back, and an insistent call. It lives in firs and conifers, and pecks its way down tree trunks. It's drawn to suet and black-oil sunflower seeds.

Anna's hummingbird
Both sexes have a coppery-green back and gray underside, but males have bright red heads. They can be spotted at nectar feeders.
