New home shows hit the TV lineup

Warm up the boob tube, Alice — new home shows are a-comin'.

"Under 1 Roof," Fridays, 9 p.m., HGTV. This show actually debuted in August, but that still counts as "new," in general terms. In this reality home show, a professional life coach counsels conflicting housemates while a designer whips up a room they both love — and maybe even without one of them moving out. We like to think of it as "feelings and ceilings."

"Hammered with John and Jimmy DiResta," Sept. 16, noon, HGTV. John is a cop who used to be a comedian. Jimmy is an artist trained at NYC's School of Visual Arts. They are brothers. Together they work on cool construction projects, like extreme go-carts, dog houses and a fish tank with inserts for human heads. There's probably a punch line in that somewhere, but John is the comedian here.

"Rachael Ray," Sept. 18, 3 p.m., KIRO. Oprah's favorite Food Network cook gets her own talk show — wisely, one hour before "Oprah."

"B. Original" (9 a.m.) and "Craft Lab" (10:30 a.m.), Sept. 25, DIY. These two new series are part of the network's weekly crafting block chock-full of do-it-yourself programs on scrapbooking, knitting, jewelry-making and more. In "B. Original," host Michele Beschen lives and dyes (snort) by the motto "Follow No One," celebrating creativity and originality in every project out there. "Craft Lab" host Jennifer Perkins, meanwhile, gives crafters of all levels something to make and love.

You'll be happy to know some good old favorites are coming back, too:

"The Martha Stewart Show," Tuesday, 9 a.m., KONG. Stewart pulls out all the stops for her second season. Check out these "good things" she'll be giving away: a $400,000 home (in North Carolina or Georgia, though, so it's probably nicer than the one-room shanty you'd get for that price in Seattle) and three 2007 Chevrolet Suburbans (you could sell that dream home to fill one up). Home Makeover Month starts Sept. 18, and she'll also catch up with Martha look-alikes, America's best cooks, clever kid inventors and amazing pet tales. The home-giveaway sweepstakes runs through Oct. 6, and, as they say, you will have to watch to win.

"This Old House," Oct. 8, 5 p.m., KCTS. For its fifth season, the crew makes house calls in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Denver, Sacramento, Calif., St. Louis and Boston (where they'll transform a 1916 home), working side by side with owners to tackle projects they'd have no business doing themselves.

"Bob Vila," Sept. 16, 10:30 a.m., KONG. The new season features projects focused on converting spaces to meet a family's changing needs: making way for a baby, creating a rec room, building a six-car garage for Dad's midlife Miatas (OK, we made up that last one). Vila also will address economical storm-ready housing in the Gulf Coast area and launch a "My Project" blog at bobvila.com.
