Saturday, February 25, 2006 - Page updated at 12:00 AM DVDs turn TVs into fireplaces, aquariums and even beachesNewsday Couch potatoes no longer have to face that void when the TV is off. Now there are DVD screen savers that can transform your set into a classic painting or natural landscape. Just pop a disc into your DVD player and hit play. Screen savers are the latest accessory for flat-screen TVs, which have become a hot commodity. Last year, 19.6 million sleek, wall-mounted LCD TV sets and 4.6 million plasma TVs were sold. And what better way to display your new TV than to hang it on the wall like artwork, says Chris Gordon of www.plasmawindow.com. The only problem is, when it's off, it's like a "picture frame with no picture." That's why Gordon created a line of screen savers for all types of TVs, including HDTVs, with abstract paintings or calming waterfalls. Prices range from $14.95 to $24.95. If you're looking for a little more action, try CityScapes LA and NY, featured on PlasmaScapes and TV ScreenScapes from www.plasmaventures.com, made for traditional and wide-screen TVs. DVDs include FunkyScapes and WaterScapes, to fit any mood. Prices range from $11.95 to $25.95. Take a "virtual vacation," for $16.99 with www.wavesDVD.com, where scenes from beaches around the world are captured on DVD and VHS. It's a "less-cheesier concept" than the typical screen saver, and it's great if "you want something to focus your energy on and relax," says creator Greg Voevodsky. If you prefer the old-school computer screen saver, www.screendreamsDVD.com has the typical aquarium, butterflies or fireplace. There also are digitally designed beaches and rain forest scenes with soothing soundtracks. DVDs cost $19.99. Copyright © 2006 The Seattle Times Company Most read articles
