Sunday, November 30, 2003 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Planting an idea for next weekend: Head for Holidays Under Glass By Valerie Easton
We've come to the point in the year when plants are best enjoyed indoors, where it is warm and dry. The Friends of the Volunteer Park Conservatory invites you to its annual Holidays Under Glass celebration next Sunday, showcasing the holiday cheer of fragrant greenery and flowers in full bloom. Come join the festive atmosphere in the Seasonal House, where snowflakes dangle overhead and an elegant holiday tree decked out in crystal ornaments is on display along amaryllis and hundreds of poinsettias accented with variegated foliage plants. Children are welcome, with special activities planned for them. Sip cider and snack on Christmas cookies while strolling through the Victorian-style conservatory amidst a colorful array of orchids, bromeliads, cacti and bird-of-paradise. You might get lucky and find the conservatory's 85-year-old jade tree in bloom. There will be a drawing for a natural greens holiday wreath in the gift shop, which will remain open until 4 p.m. for shopping. Holidays Under Glass Open House is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. at the conservatory, 1402 E. Galer St., at the north end of Volunteer Park. The event is free and open to the public; donations to the conservatory will be accepted. If you can't make the party, the holiday display in the Seasonal House will be open from Wednesday through Jan. 5; conservatory hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and until 3 p.m. on holidays. For information, call the Friends of the Volunteer Park Conservatory at 206-322-4112. Valerie Easton also writes about Plant Life in Sunday's Pacific Northwest Magazine. Write to her at P.O.
