NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vancouver Canucks keep finding ways to win, no matter how long it takes.

Alex Edler scored in the sixth round of a shootout, and the Canucks beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 Tuesday for their fifth victory in six games.

The Canucks improved to 2-1 in the season series against the team they ousted in the Western Conference semifinals last season — where they won all three games in Nashville, including the series-clinching sixth game.

Vancouver did it by playing beyond regulation for a fifth straight game and the eighth time in 10 games.

"We're obviously not a team that gives up, and we expected a close game with these guys," said Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, who scored on a first-period power play. "We've been in a lot of overtime games and shootout games lately, so we're accustomed to this now. And we're getting on the right end of these, so we're doing something right."

Colin Wilson tried to extend the shootout, but was stopped by Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo. Luongo had 37 saves through overtime.

"It's a tight league. Not a lot of separation, and we're going to be involved in a lot of tight games," Luongo said. "It's the type of hockey we're going to be involved in, especially coming down the stretch."

Note

Owen Nolan, a five-time All-Star who hasn't played in the NHL since the 2009-10 season, announced his retirement at the San Jose Sharks' rink.

Former Sharks captain Nolan, 39, scored 422 goals in 1,200 league games.
