NHL | Penguins, loud Pittsburgh fans to confront Red Wings tonight

Related

PITTSBURGH — The Detroit Red Wings' attitude heading into tonight's Game 6 of the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final is that the ascent to the top of Mount Everest is more satisfying to those who have survived stumbles during the climb.

"What makes the Stanley Cup so worthwhile is everything that you throw into it," said Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood, a former Seattle Thunderbird.

Detroit lost to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in three overtimes Monday night, reducing the Red Wings' series lead to 3-2. Maxime Talbot of the Penguins scored with 34.3 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

"The disappointment phase ends about 15 minutes [after] you're out of the room," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "For me, it was when I got home. I talked to my wife for a second, and she was disappointed, too. When you get up in the morning, the sun gets up, and so do we and we're up 3-2. Let's play."

Game 6 is at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh.

Petr Sykora, who scored the winning goal in Game 5, said, "I can't wait for tomorrow night because the building's going to be really loud here."

The Penguins are battered. Ryan Malone broke his nose for the second time in the series. Sergei Gonchar has a back or shoulder injury that wouldn't allow him to shoot during his only on-ice appearance in overtime. Sykora has a significant but undisclosed upper-body injury.

Notes

• Babcock, on what he thought about Detroit's Dan Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg getting called for interference on Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in OT Monday: "I'll jump on the soapbox. We talk about scoring more goals in the National Hockey League. We want more goals. No they don't; don't tell me that. I've never seen anything like that in my whole life."

John Tortorella, 49, was fired as coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, four years after leading the team to its only Stanley Cup title. He was 239-222-36-38 and had one season left on his contract. Barry Melrose, ESPN analyst and former Los Angeles Kings coach, has been mentioned as a potential successor to Tortorella.
