VANCOUVER, B.C. — Mike Modano contributed a 56-foot goal and an assist in the second period to help the Dallas Stars edge the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 Tuesday night.
Goaltender Marty Turco was spectacular in making 29 saves for the Stars, who are tied with San Jose for first place in the Pacific Division.
Modano's work was a key factor in Dallas' 3-1 lead 4:31 into the second period; Canucks goaltender Curtis Sanford was pulled at that point for Drew MacIntyre.
Sanford said coach Alain Vigneault "had to do that. If I was in his position, I would have done the same thing."
Steve Ott's short-handed goal put the Stars ahead 4-1 with 12:30 left in the game.
Ryan Kesler and Markus Naslund scored for Vancouver in the last nine minutes.
Naslund said the Canucks, who have two wins in their last nine games, made too many errors.
"I always think when stuff like this happens, when it's mistake after mistake, it has to come down to focus and preparation," Naslund said.
Notes
• Canucks defenseman Willie Mitchell is out indefinitely with a broken vertebra in his back.
• Peter Mueller, a former Everett Silvertips standout, scored twice to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-2 victory over host Columbus.
