PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, the league's marquee name, learned Tuesday he will be out for six to eight weeks because of a high ankle sprain.
Crosby, 20, was injured in Friday's 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
"I was hoping three or four weeks would be the most," Crosby said. "It doesn't look like it will be like that. We'll see how fast I heal."
The injury comes at a bad time for the league, with Crosby expected to be a big drawing card at Sunday's All-Star Game in Atlanta. Crosby was last season's league scoring champion and most valuable player.
"The big thing with this is time. You really can't do very much," said Crosby, who will wear a protective boot on his right foot for about two weeks.
Notes
• One-third of the 12 fan-voted starters aren't going to the All-Star Game, including Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo, whose wife is pregnant. Crosby, New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur (family obligations) and Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg (back spasms) also won't play.
• Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov signed a three-year contract extension for a reported $12.75 million.
• Cable network Versus has picked up an option to televise league games for three more seasons.
• Toronto fired general manager John Ferguson and hired former GM Cliff Fletcher on an interim basis.
