The Seattle Thunderbirds are expected to sign a 30-year lease next week to be the anchor tenant at the Kent Events Center, beginning in 2008-09.
The Kent City Council on Thursday approved the project. Construction is expected to begin immediately.
"We are very excited about this move to Kent and the partnership with the city in their new events center," Russ Farwell, T-birds part-owner and general manager, said in a statement.
The Thunderbirds play a 72-game schedule and are a member of the Western Hockey League. Their final season at KeyArena begins Sept. 29, against the Everett Silvertips.
The Kent Events Center will be built on a 17-acre parcel of land near the current site of the Commons Playfields. The facility will seat 6,500 for hockey.
The T-birds, who have played 30 seasons in Seattle, are expected to keep the name Seattle Thunderbirds.
Note
• The T-birds are selling season tickets for 2007-08. Fans who purchase tickets this season will receive the highest seating priority in the Kent Events Center. For tickets, call 206-448-7825.
