For the third straight year, the Newport girls basketball program is hosting a Cancer Awareness Night.

When the Knights play Skyline in a KingCo 4A matchup Friday, they will decorate the gym in pink and wear pink uniforms.

In addition to raising awareness, Newport holds a fund-raiser and donates the proceeds to cancer research organizations. This year, though, the Knights have decided to donate the money raised to Seattle Christian senior Katie Collier.

Collier, a Washington basketball recruit, who is currently fighting through acute promyelocytic leukemia. Click here for the story I wrote on Collier in October.

Collier has been an inspiration for many. I continue to be amazed each time her father, Mark, provides an update. She refuses to let the disease get the best of her and has even played in games while going through chemotherapy.

Newport will be donating its concession stand sales to the Katie Collier Medical Fund to help the Collier family cover medical costs. Students will also collect donations at halftime. If you can't make the game and would like to contribute, donations can be made at any U.S. Bank location.

Checks should be made out to "Katie Collier Medical Fund."
