This event took place recently, and I wanted to share the information that was passed along to me.

It's a good cause, honoring a former high-school athlete, who played baseball and basketball at Woodinville.

The Kyle Charvat Foundation held its annual golf tournament May 19th at The Golf Club at Newcastle. More than 80 players filled the field on what proved to be the best day of the year, weather-wise, so far in 2011. The event netted more than $13,000, of which 100 percent will go toward helping young adults battling life-threatening cancer in our community.

The namesake of the foundation, Kyle Charvat, attended Woodinville High School and participated in baseball and basketball for the Falcons. The majority of the foundation's volunteer board also attended local high schools and became friends with Kyle either in high school or college when they all attended the University of Washington.

It was at UW where a brain tumor the size of a golf ball was discovered in Kyle's brain during his freshman year. Traditional treatment avenues were attempted, but none proved fully successful. An experimental treatment was suggested, but Kyle's insurance provider wouldn't cover the cost -- $100,000 in total.

It was at that point that his Theta Chi fraternity brothers took it upon themselves to help raise the money needed for the experimental treatment. Through various fund-raising efforts, Theta Chi raised more than the $100,000 needed. Kyle passed in January of his senior year at UW, but thanks to the experimental treatment, his life was longer and more enjoyable than most thought possible.

It is in the spirit of helping others battling life-threatening cancer situations that the foundation was formed. Costs for treatments go beyond medication and doctor visits. Unexpected costs like transportation, organic groceries, and other miscellaneous items are often not covered by insurance and put tremendous financial strain on the patient and their support system. This is where the Kyle Charvat Foundation steps in.

To date, the Kyle Charvat Foundation has made donations to seven brave young adults in situations similar to Kyle's and it recently received three new applications for support. Here is a link to the stories of the beneficiaries to date: http://kcfund.org/beneficiaries-ss.html.
