Garfield boys basketball to 'put on our NBA hat'
Posted by Mason Kelley
When asked about Garfield's upcoming three-day stretch that includes trip to Springfield, Mass. for the 2011 Spalding Hoophall Classic at Springfield College Jan. 15 before a quick return trip for the King Holiday Hoopfest at Hec Edmundson Pavilion Jan. 17, Bulldogs coach Ed Haskins said it will be like his team is on an NBA road trip.
"We said we’re going to try and put on our NBA hat and go ahead and play Miami Heat (Morgan Park) back there and then we’re going to come back and play the Boston Celtics in Rainier Beach," Haskins said. "We’re right back-to-back."
Garfield, the top-ranked team in 4A, starts the trip against Morgan Park, ranked No. 10 in the Chicago Tribune boys basketball Top 20.
Haskins said it is an interesting matchup, because of an AAU rivalry.
"There’s kind of a rivalry between Mac Irvin (Fire) out of Chicago and Seattle Rotary," Haskins said. "The coach, Nick Irvin, from Morgan Park is part of that rivalry. I’m not part of that rivalry, but I’m about to be. Chicago-Seattle kind of has a thing going on and we’re meeting back at a great event, one of the best events of the year."
The Bulldogs fly right back to Seattle and will play Rainier Beach, ranked No. 1 in 3A, at 8 p.m. Jan. 17.
"It’s going to be tough," senior point guard Tony Wroten Jr. said. "Coach told us it’s like an NBA schedule, but we’re old enough. We’ve got time to handle it, buckle down and, hopefully, get both of the wins."
Between the travel and the matchups it will be a tough stretch for Garfield, one Haskins expects to help his team mature.
"You’ve got to play the best to be the best," Haskins said. "That’s one thing I learned in all my years of coaching. You can’t be scared to play anybody."
