Clash of titans
Skyline and Mercer Island will hit the pool Thursday in a battle of defending Class 4A and 3A state girls swimming champions.
The meet will take place at 3:30 p.m. at Mary Wayte Pool in Mercer Island.
“It’ll be a fun meet,” Skyline coach Susan Simpkins said. “It’ll be a good matchup meet, no matter what.”
Bothell bounces back
After winning only three games last season, the Bothell girls soccer team is making a major turn-around.
The Cougars are 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the KingCo. Seven starters returned from last season and Boise State University-bound midfielder Shannon Schueren also turned out after not playing for the Cougars as a junior.
“The captains, Alexis Thode and Shannon Schueren, have done an amazing job in leading the team and being great captains,” first-year Bothell coach Shaun Warner said.
Thode, a junior goalkeeper, also has been a force in goal with five shutouts.
“They are playing like a team and everyone understands their roles,” Warner said. “No individual is more important than any other individual on the team.”
‘Kicks for the Cure’ set for Oct. 7
The second annual “Kicks for the Cure” girls soccer match between Kentwood and Kentlake will be on Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. at French Field in Kent.
Last year, the event helped raise more than $4,000 for the MultiCare Mammogram Assistance Fund of Covington.
Kentwood players and coaches will wear hot pink jerseys, while Kentlake players and coaches will be in light pink. Both schools are selling supportive pink t-shirts each Monday.
