Basketball news from WIAA Executive Board meeting
Posted by Mason Kelley
I just spoke to Mike Colbrese, the WIAA's executive director, to get an update on what happened at the WIAA Exective Board meetings Monday and Tuesday.
He said the board made a few more decisions on the changes to the state basketball tournament and I wanted to share them here on the blog. Before I get into the most recent news, here are the original changes for background, click here.
There were some things left unresolved at the Representative Assembly meeting in late April and a few of those questions were answered after my chat with Colbrese on Tuesday
The first decision discussed was to allow district tournaments to run into the Tuesday prior to the first round of state play held at regional sites. Those extra days are to alleviate concerns about issues like travel and missed school days.
"This gives them a little bit more flexibility," Colbrese said.
The second decision made was to seed four teams into each regional site -- those sites have yet to be determined and won't be settled until the fall -- for the first round of state. There will be two No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds at each regional venue.
During the first Friday night of state play at those regional facilities, the No. 1 seeds will play each other. The winner of that game advances to the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, which in the case of 4A and 3A boys and girls remains in the Tacoma Dome.
The No. 2 seeds will then play each other in a loser-out matchup. The winner of the that game advances to play the loser of the game between No. 1 seeds in a loser-out contest.
Now, once the final eight-team field state field is set, those programs need to be seeded. As of now, the WIAA Executive Board is leaning toward a predetermined rotation of which teams will play each other in the first round at the state site.
For example, Region 1's first-place team would play Region 4's second-place team and they would set a rotation like that for two years.
But they are also talking about the idea of redrawing all eight teams, throwing them into a hat and letting them draw.
There has been no final determination on how teams will be seeded at the final state site.
"I'm seeing an enthusiasm from the board and from the staff about what these new events are going to look like," Colbrese said. "I think everyone realizes they're going to be exciting."
