Are national championships in prep sports on their way?
Posted by Joshua Mayers
Sounds like it. At least on some level.
On Monday, IMG Academies and the National High School Coaches Association said this summer they will host tournaments to determine national champions for 7-man football, 7-man lacrosse, team tennis and golf.
Eventually, organizers hope to expand the competition to 20 sports, including basketball and baseball. It's a small step. And kind of an awkward step, as the sports selected aren't typically what you see in the high-school scene at the state level.
Most of the athletes will compete as part of All-Star teams from their home states
But it is a step nonetheless.
I'm a little undecided about where I stand when it comes to national prep championships. I don't think I like it. It would take time away from academics, obviously. Plus, a tournament needed to determine a true national champion (an undisputed one, at that) seems like a daunting task. And you never know what agendas are going to be set by IMG Academies, or maybe if ESPN gets involved.
Though the entertainment value would certainly be there, especially for something like basketball.
What do you think about trying to crown national champions in high-school sports?
