Tahoma-Auburn wrestling bout Friday; Reichert to be honored
Posted by Sandy Ringer
What a way to open the South Puget Sound League North Division wrestling season.
Tahoma, ranked second in the state behind Lake Stevens, takes on No. 7 Auburn tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Tahoma. Auburn placed third at last year's 4A state tournament, while Tahoma finished fourth.
The match features three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their weight classes in 4A -- Tahoma's Tyler Lamb (145) and Nick Bayer (189) and Auburn's Dylan Rutledge (171).
Friday is also Tahoma's alumni night and three former state place-winners are being inducted into the Tahoma Hall of Fame -- including Lee Reichert, currently coach at Enumclaw, which is the two-time defending 3A champion. Reichert placed third at state for the Bears as a sophomore in 1969.
The others being inducted are Jeff Hall and Rich Palmer, both fifth-place finishers in 1972.
Tahoma started the Hall of Fame in 2006. The first group inducted was the 1991 state championship team. In 2007, Former head coach Brian Higa (who has been back with the program as an assistant coach the past few years) was also inducted.
Tahoma's 1995 championship team was inducted in 2007. Last year, the school recognized three state champions -- Mike Reichert (Lee's brother, who was Tahoma's first champ back in 1969), Ted Powell (1980) and Lang Davison (1981).
According to assistant coach Doug "Boomer" Burnham, Tahoma will ultimately induct all of its state place-winners.
