Class 4A/3A state soccer thread: Saturday edition
Posted by Joshua Mayers
Checking in here at Harry Lang Stadium again.
I'll be providing updates from all the day's action. I will also be updating goals on our twitter feed: http://www.twitter.com/seatimespreps
If you have any questions, be sure to shoot them my way.
Some quick-hitting predictions in the championships:
4A -- Issaquah over Skyline, 3-2
3A -- Mercer Island over Columbia River, 2-1
Analysis after the jump...
Class 4A championship
Skyline v. Issaquah
Halftime -- Writing duties for the 3A championship have kept me from updating the blog. Skyline leads 1-0 on a 14th-minute breakaway goal by sophomore Shea O'Donnell.
I think the Spartans have had the better of it so far with numerous near misses. O'Donnell hit the crossbar on another breakaway later in the half.
45th minute -- GOAL! Kristin Maris collects a pass in front of the goal and fires a shot past the diving Tina Vargas in goal to level the score at 1-1 for Issaquah.
51st minute -- Issaquah forward Margaret Rauch nearly gives the Eagles a 2-1 lead, but her shot is cleared off the line by a Skyline defender before rolling into the net.
65th minute -- Still tied 1-1. This half has been very even, each team with several chances to score. Certainly one of the best games of the year.
End of regulation -- We're headed to overtime.
Final -- Skyline 2, Issaquah 1. Spartans win shootout 3-1.
Class 3A championship
Columbia River 2, Mercer Island 1
Pregame -- Winner takes home its first-ever state championship.
3rd minute -- MI's Mary Hill curls in a beauty of a corner kick but no one is there for the Islanders. Both teams are definitely up for this one at the start. We also have our first sun break of the tournament.
10th minute -- The sun is gone but Mercer Island is still on the attack. CR goalkeeper Teagan Ryan has been very busy.
16th minute -- Heidi Bucklin of Columbia River gets booked for colliding with MI's freshman goalkeeper Corey Goelz.
23rd minute -- GOAL! Erin Bourguignon connects on a bouncing cross from Mary Hill to give the Islanders the 1-0 lead. Well struck by the senior captain.
27th minute -- Chieftains have been pressing since the opening goal. Goelz had to punch save a free kick, then the ensuing CR corner kick was just headed over the bar. Then Bucklin's shot on a breakaway was saved. The intensity has definitely picked up a notch.
Halftime -- Mercer Island leads 1-0. Columbia River definitely picked it up in the later portion of the half. I definitely expect more scoring in this one.
The Islanders have had the best crowd support all weekend.
46th minute -- Islanders are almost exclusively playing defense now. So far they've been up to the task, but I'm not sure they'll survive 35 more minutes of this without holding on to the ball more.
53rd minute -- SAVE! CR goalkeeper Teagan Ryan just had one of the best saves I've ever seen at the high-school level. The senior leaped high to just get a hanf to a Lauren Frank shot that seemed destined for the upper corner of the net.
59th minute -- "She's a fresh-man!" chants the MI crowd after goalkeeper Corey Goelz makes another fine save.
62nd minute -- The Islanders have definitely been more involved on offense recently, which will only make holding onto the lead that much easier.
67th minute -- GOAL! Columbia River ties the score when Kellianne Swenson heads in a cross from Hannah Kimsey. Considering the CR pressure throughout the game, the Chieftains were bound to get one.
74th minute -- MI's Ellen Haas booked for a challenge on a ball in the air.
78th minute -- A shot by Columbia River's Marissa MacKinnon hits the post!
End of regulation -- Mercer Island 1, Columbia River 1. Second comeback in as many days for the Chieftains forces overtime.
Final -- Columbia River 2, Mercer Island 1. Chieftains goalkeeper Teagan Ryan made two saves in the 3-2 shootout win. MI goalkeeper Corey Goelz also had two saves.
Class 4A third-place game
Kentwood 1, Kamiakin 0
Pregame -- Had to imagine waking up to play an early third-place game was tough for the Conks after last night's heartbreaker. We'll see how they play in their season-finale.
10th minute -- Kamiakin has a putback goal called back for offsides. KW doesn't look as sharp as it normally has.
15th minute -- GOAL! Kentwood's Reilly Retz floats a half-cross/half-shot toward the goal that sails over the Kamiakin GK and into the side of the net. Conks lead 1-0.
28th minute -- A great little chip shot by Kamiakin's Jori Skorpik is turned away by the crossbar. Braves come so close again, it what has been a fairly even-played game.
Halftime -- Kentwood leads 1-0 on the flukey floater by Reilly Retz that ended up in the net. The Conks still haven't allowed a goal in the state playoffs, though KW's defense has looked vulnerable at times.
51st minute -- Kentwood has taken control of the game. The Braves seeing very little of the ball right now.
63rd minute -- Another typical game for KW. Exceptional defense, lacking in offense. One KW player who has had an extraordinary game is Kiana Kraft, she's the best player on the field right now.
Final -- Kentwood bounces back from a tough loss to get the win. Conks incredibly didn't allow a goal in the state tournament and clinched their best finish in school history.
Class 3A third-place game
Camas 1, West Valley (Yakima) 0
24th minute -- I arrived a little late for this one, but caught the first goal of the game. It was a nice finish by Olivia Lovell on a pass from Kristen Berry.
Halftime -- Papermakers take a 1-0 lead into the break. Camas appears to have been controlling most of the game from what I saw.
Certainly both these teams will be disappointed not to be playing for the championship. Each played strong games in the semifinals, but came up short.
48th minute -- Camas is definitely controlling the game. Rams goalkeeper Lee Hanses is extremely busy in goal.
65th minute -- West Valley isn't creating nearly enough. They'll be hard-pressed to get back into this one.
Final -- Camas wins this one 1-0. A deserved win for the Papermakers, who were clearly the better side.
