Final thoughts on Friday night football
Posted by Mason Kelley
Well, after rushing for 150 yards and five touchdowns Friday night, it seems safe to say Issaquah running back Grant Gellatly is finally healthy.
After the Eagles' 42-10 victory over Kentwood in the preliminary round of 32, the senior said he is still struggling with his breakaway speed, but he seemed thrilled just to be back and healthy.
Just his presence on the field seems to give his teammates a confidence boost. He adds a nice complement to the impressive passing numbers Issaquah has put up all season. On rainy nights like this one, Gellatly's pressence adds another dimension to an already talented offense.
I expected this to be a closer matchup. It sounds like the Conquerors had some players out with the flu. They kept the game close early. I was particularly impressed with the play of Josh Smith, the basketball standout who decided to give football a try his senior season. The kid can play. The most impressive thing he did all game was chase down Nik Landdeck at the end of a 50-yard run. Smith caught Landdeck from behind and showed impressive speed.
I was also impressed with Landdeck, a linebacker who was all over the field.
Speaking of Smith, I saw University of Washington basketball coach Lorenzo Romar in the stands with assistant coach Paul Fortier watching the big man play football. Smith has yet to decide where he will play hoops next season.
Here is a look at the rest of Friday night's playoff action.
No. 1 Bothell 61, Stanwood 0
The Blue Train continues to pick up steam.
No. 2 Skyline 42, Kentridge 0
Spartans recover nicely after last week's loss.
No. 1 Bellevue 34, Rainier Beach 0
Joey Mangialardi had another big game with 121 yards and three touchdowns.
Auburn 42, Kamiak 7
No Chris Young, no problem for Trojans.
Lindbergh 44, Bainbridge 6
Lindbergh's freshman QB Matt Stuart had a big game with 217 yards and five TD passes.
O'Dea 30, Bonney Lake 16
Irish honor the memory of basketball coach Phil Lumpkin with an emotional win.
Other news and notes:
-- Curtis junior Rahmel Dockery had 342 all-purpose yards (197 return yards with one TD, 134 yards receiving with one touchdown, and 11 yards rushing with two TDs) in the Vikings' 42-22 win over Wilson.
-- Ferris charged into the round of 16 with a 21-10 victory over Wenatchee. It's been a big week for the Saxons, who won a three-way playoff Tuesday before turning around and winning on Friday.
-- Undefeated Eisenhower edged Walla Walla, 26-20.
-- Southridge knocked off Mead, 14-10.
-- Mount Spokane cruised to a 47-7 win over Sunnyside in the 3A playoffs.
-- Union (56-10 over Olympic) and Timberline (51-24 over Kennedy Catholic) rolled to big wins.
-- Will Hoppes, the QB at Tri-Cities Prep, threw four TD passes. He now has 124 for his career, which sets the 1B record, which was previously held by Lummi's Dustin Tom. Tri-Cities Prep won 52-14 over Touchet.
-- This is from Thursday, but it's a nice stat line: King's Curtis Clauson had three catches for 88 yards and three TDs, two INTs (one returned for 43-yard TD), a fumble recovery for 69-yard touchdown and seven solo tackles.
I think that's all the information I'm going to throw out there tonight. I'm going to be at Mountlake Terrace's first-ever playoff game on Saturday, so I'll have more information then, I might even do a quick chat before the game if anyone is hanging around the blog.
