Local girls soccer roundup: district and state tournaments
Posted by Joshua Mayers
Northwest 4A District (3 berths)
Clinched state berth: Jackson, Monroe
Still alive: Kamiak, Edmonds-Woodway
Thoughts: The top seed from each division, Jackson and Monroe battle to take the district championship and the No. 1 seed. Look for a great game between Kamiak and E-W for the final berth to state -- each team advanced in the last round via PK shootout.
Northwest 3A District (2 berths)
Clinched state berth: Meadowdale
Still alive: Glacier Peak, Everett
Thoughts: Meadowdale stomped the Grizzlies for the district title, now Glacier Peak plays Everett for the final berth to state. The defending-champ Seagulls knocked out Mount Vernon on Thursday to keep their season alive.
Northwest 2A District (4 berths)
Clinched state berth: Archbishop Murphy, Sehome
Still alive: Lakewood, Cedarcrest, Squalicum, Burlington-Edison, Bellingham, Granite Falls
Thoughts: A lot of great teams crowd this district tournament and there's a great chance the state champ will come from this field.
SeaKing 4A/Greater St. Helens 4A League (3 berths)
Clinched state berth: Issaquah
Still alive: Skyline, Eastlake, Skyview, Battleground
Thoughts: Skyline hosts the Skyview-Battleground loser (played Thursday) in a winner-to-state/loser-out game. Eastlake travels south to the play the GSHL game winner in a similar game. Both will be on Saturday and Skyview has a great chance of upsetting a KingCo team. KingCo teams have dominated the state tournament of late.
SeaKing 3A (4 berths)
Clinched state berth: Mercer Island, Holy Names, Bainbridge
Still alive: Lakeside, Juanita
Thoughts: Holy Names beat Bainbridge 1-0 in the Metro championship but bother teams advance to state. Lakeside beat West Seattle on Thursday for third-place and a final chance at state in a Saturday game against Juanita (which is having one of the best seasons in program history).
West Central District 4A (6 berths)
Clinched state berth: None
Still alive: Beamer/Stadium, Decatur/Bellarmine Prep, Kentlake/Tahoma, Gig Harbor/Kentwood, Auburn Riverside/South Kitsap, Olympia/Emerald Ridge.
Thoughts: I paired the matchups in the 'still alive' section. Each game is a winner-to-state/loser-out game. No room for error on Saturday, as unbeaten teams like Emerald Ridge and South Kitsap could be out of the state field with their first losses of the year.
West Central District 3A (8 berths)
Clinched state berth: None
Still alive: Yelm/Kennedy Catholic, Olympic/Lindbergh, Sumner/Capital, Mount Rainier/Camas, Auburn Mountainview/North Kitsap, Hazen/Union, Peninsula/Bonney Lake, Columbia River/Enumclaw
Thoughts: Similar to the 4A playoffs, there is no room for error here and one slip up could keep some great teams out of the state field. Half of the state field will be determined from this tournament on Saturday.
1A Tri-District (6 berths)
Clinched state berth: Orting, King's, Seattle Academy
Still alive: Vashon Island, Overlake, Seattle Christian, Bush
Thoughts: Three of the four teams still alive will make the state field. I also think there's a good chance the state champ will come from this field.
1B/2B Tri-District (6 berths)
Clinched state berth: Orcas Island, Seattle Lutheran
Still alive: Napavine, Life Christian, North Sound Christian, Bear Creek, Mount Vernon Christian, Evergreen Lutheran, Rainier Christian, La Conner
Thoughts: Saturday's game will finalized the state berths.
This is how I understand things. Let me know if I have something wrong!
