Final thoughts on Friday night football
Posted by Mason Kelley
This is going to be a bit shorter post than most, since the Game of the Week happened yesterday. With Bothell-Skyline in the books, I went out to watch Interlake at Bellevue. I was curious to see how the Saints' high-speed offense looked against the Wolverines' defense.
Well, it looked pretty good, at least for one play. After Interlake executed a flea flicker perfectly for a 72-yard touchdown strike it was all Bellevue in a 42-13 victory.
The Wolverines are hitting their stride at the right time, and they didn't seem to lose any key pieces to injury this week. Quarterback Kendrick Van Ackeren didn't dress for the game. Coach Butch Goncharoff said he was beaten up after the Liberty game last week and, with a playoff spot secure, he didn't want to risk it. It helps that Joe Joe Conner does a really nice job running the offense and the two regularly share duties. Kendrick's brother, Brayden, who was also injured in that game, was in uniform, but didn't play.
There isn't a whole lot left to say outside of what was in the game story. Joey Mangialardi and Freddie Levine had big days for the Wolverines and their defense bottled up the Saints.
The Wolverines will host a home game next Friday, playing the loser of Saturday's matchup between Rainier Beach and Bainbridge. Interlake opens the 2A playoffs on the road Nov. 10.
Here is a look at some other notable performances.
O'Dea 42, Nathan Hale 6
Irish take the Metro title.
Mountlake Terrace 21, Kamiak 12
Hawks headed for first playoff appearance
Kentwood 28, Kentlake 0
The Conquerors wrap up a playoff spot with the victory.
Other notable performances:
Lake Stevens running back Brennan Frost picked up 239 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries in a 25-13 victory over Snohomish.
In his first start, Bonney Lake's freshman quarterback Chris Brown completed 22 of 36 for 249 yards and a touchdown, leading the Panthers to a 38-7 victory.
Auburn's Chris Young set the school's single-game rushing record with 284 yards and six touchdowns -- tied for the single-game record -- on 13 carries. The previous record was set by Joe Erickson in 1998.
When Marysville-Pilchuck's Austin Denton gets in the game this season -- he missed one week with an injury -- he picks up at least 200 yards. He did it again Friday. The senior rushed for 323 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in the Tomahawks' 49-28 win over Oak Harbor.
More confusion in the GSL
Well, after nine weeks, two of the three playoff spots in the GSL have been determined. Mead and Central Valley are in.
However, to determine the third and final playoff spot, there will be a three-way playoff on Tuesday between Gonzaga Prep, Ferris and University.
Gonzaga Prep lost to Lewis and Clark, 21-20 and Ferris edged University, 28-25 in the game that went down to the wire.
It has been a crazy season in Spokane.
There are more games tomorrow, so we'll be back then.
