Wesco 3A playoff picture is crystal clear

Posted by Darren Fessenden

We can officially put to rest any talk of a Kansas City tiebreaker in Wesco 3A, after things stood pat Thursday night across the league.

Meadowdale got a 19-yard field goal from Sam Werner with two seconds to go in its 17-14 win over Everett. The No. 6 Mavericks (9-0, 4-0), who trailed 14-0 at halftime, have been the Cardiac Kids this year with overtime wins over Glacier Peak and Mount Vernon and this nail-biter at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Meadowdale will host the Seamount League's No. 4 team (likely 5-3 Renton) to determine District 1's No. 1 seed.

Everett (4-5, 2-2) wrapped up the third and final seed in this five-team league. The Seagulls have to be one of the better 4-5 teams around, with a 31-13 loss at Glacier Peak being their only double-digit setback.

The Seagulls still have a pigtail game against Northwest No. 2 Sedro-Woolley (4-5) to determine who gets the unenviable task of traveling to SPSL No. 1 (and second-ranked) Lakes. That winner will become District 3's No. 3 seed. (In case you were wondering, you read that correctly: the No. 2 team in the state would open the first round as the third seed in their own district.)

Glacier Peak (7-2, 3-1), an easy winner over Shorecrest on Thursday, secured the No. 2 seed and will play at the South Puget Sound League's No. 2 team (likely 10th-ranked Peninsula). This will determine District 3's No. 6 team.

With a full Wesco 4A slate Friday, we can only hope that the standings remain relatively intact. Otherwise, we could have a KC tiebreaker (or two) the next day -- on Halloween. Now that's scary.
