Issaquah girls soccer team clinches KingCo 4A regular-season title, coach Tom Bunnell reaches milestone
Posted by Joshua Mayers
Tuesday was quite a night for the third-ranked Eagles girls soccer team.
With a 4-0 win against Bothell at Pop Keeney, Issaquah clinched the regular-season title in what is probably the toughest league in the state. The Eagles will now host the KingCo championship game next week -- the league tournament starts on Saturday.
The victory also marked the 100th win for coach Tom Bunnell with the girls soccer program. He has also coached the Eagles boys team and at Seattle University.
"I was talking to my wife when I took this job, and she said, 'What's your plan?' and I said, 'How about 100 wins or 10 seasons, whichever comes first?'" Bunnell said. "I didn't know what I was getting into."
(Don't worry, he's not resigning... "That went out the window a while ago," he said.)
Bunnell continued: "Someone last season said I might be getting close, so we were counting it up and saw I could actually get to 100 wins, but it would have to be a great season."
His record in six years with the team stands at 100-11-6, including three 3A state titles. The Eagles (13-2-0, 10-1-0) have won 12 of their last 13 games. A state qualifier last year, Bunnell said the team has exceeded expectations this season.
"At the beginning of the year, I was hoping we would just get into KingCo tournament, literally, because of the strength of the league," he said.
Safe to say there's no ceiling on how far this team can go anymore.
